Ted Bullard - Liquid Silence Dive Charters

The Gulf waters are warming steadily as we move through May, leading to increased activity across the offshore reefs and ledges. Visibility has remained consistent, providing productive conditions for both line fishing and spearfishing. At Liquid Silence Dive, we have been focusing our efforts on the deep-water structures and the remote sections of the Middle Grounds to find the most active schools.

Offshore Report: Deep Water Success
Current offshore trips are yielding strong results for Hogfish and Grouper. We are finding the most success in depths ranging from 80 to 120 feet. The transition from spring to summer has brought larger predators closer to the primary ledges.

Hogfish: These remain a staple for our spearfishing clients. We are seeing healthy numbers on the limestone relief and smaller rock piles.

Grouper: Red Grouper activity is high on the deeper hard bottom. We recommend focused bottom hunting for those looking to fill the cooler.

Snapper: While season-dependent, we are tracking significant numbers of Mangrove Snapper moving onto the offshore wrecks.

Boat Performance & Logistics
The 35ft Cobia has been instrumental in navigating the afternoon sea breezes common this time of year. With the Seakeeper stabilizer active, our divers have enjoyed a steady platform for gearing up and managing surface intervals, even when the Gulf becomes choppy. The triple Yamaha 300s continue to allow us to reach the Middle Grounds quickly, maximizing your time in the water.

Our trips are currently departing from Pete’s Pier between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM to take advantage of the calmest morning conditions and the early bite.

Springs and Nearshore Update
For those staying closer to the coast, the Crystal River area remains a hub of activity. While we are preparing for the upcoming scalloping season in July, the nearshore reefs are currently providing excellent training grounds for those enrolled in our SDI Scuba Certification classes. Visibility at Blue Grotto and Devil’s Den is, as always, perfect for refining buoyancy and technical skills before heading offshore.

Planning Your Next Trip
As a reminder, offshore conditions change rapidly. We recommend booking your offshore spearfishing charter or reef dive at least two weeks in advance, though we finalize specific departure windows based on the latest weather data.

Requirements for your trip:

Ensure your Florida fishing license is current and purchased online.

Check your personal dive gear for any maintenance needs.

Rental gear is available but should be reserved during your initial booking to ensure proper sizing.

We look forward to seeing you on the water for a productive day of diving and hunting.

Current Availability: Mid-week dates for late May and early June are still open. Contact us to coordinate your private offshore or spring diving experience.

Offshore Grouper and Hogfish Update from Captain Ted Bullard

Liquid Silence Dive represents the peak of Gulf Coast underwater exploration. Based in Crystal River, Florida, we offer a specialized range of services including offshore spearfishing, seasonal scalloping, and comprehensive scuba diving instruction. Founded by veteran diver Ted Bullard, who has been navigating these waters since 1996, Liquid Silence Dive bridges the gap between rugged offshore hunting and the serene beauty of Florida’s freshwater springs. We depart from Pete’s Pier, utilizing a state-of-the-art 2021 Cobia 350. Powered by triple Yamaha 300s and equipped with a Seakeeper stabilizer, our vessel reaches speeds of 65 mph while maintaining a remarkably smooth platform, even in the rolling swells of the open Gulf. This allows us to reach the Middle Grounds and remote offshore wrecks 100 miles out, providing access to Hogfish, Grouper, and Snapper that few other charters can reach. For those interested in the famous freshwater systems of North Central Florida, we provide guided dives and SDI-certified classes at iconic locations such as Blue Grotto Dive Resort, Devil’s Den, and the Rainbow River. Whether you are searching for scuba diving for beginners or looking to advance your skills with Nitrox or Dive Master certifications, our small-group instruction ensures a safe, thorough, and rewarding learning environment. Our training focus is on building confident, capable divers who respect the underwater ecosystem. During the summer months, we transition to the grass flats for the Florida scalloping season. Our Crystal River scalloping trips are a staple for families and groups looking to enjoy the shallow, clear waters of the Nature Coast. These shared or private trips offer a relaxed way to experience the Gulf while harvesting fresh Florida scallops. At Liquid Silence Dive, we prioritize high-performance equipment and local knowledge. We believe in transparency and preparation, helping our guests navigate requirements like obtaining a Florida fishing license online and selecting the right gear for their specific goals. A Florida Spring Destination Made for the Underwater ExplorerThe Rainbow River stands out as one of the premier freshwater locations in North America, drawing water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. Fed by a massive first-magnitude spring system, this river pushes out millions of gallons of pristine water daily, maintaining excellent clarity and visibility that often extends beyond one hundred feet. For enthusiasts looking to participate in premium Rainbow River scuba diving, the unique geography of this river run provides an ideal environment. Located in Dunnellon, just a short drive from the coastal hubs, this inland sanctuary offers shelter from rough ocean swells and unpredictable coastal tides, ensuring reliable, high-visibility diving conditions throughout the year. The calm, predictable flow makes it excellent for individuals looking to build confidence underwater or fine-tune their buoyancy control. The Natural Environment and Year-Round AppealThe aquatic environment of the region is characterized by lush underwater vegetation, submerged limestone structures, and an abundance of local wildlife. Because the spring water emerges from underground aquifers, it remains at a constant seventy-two degrees Fahrenheit all year, providing a refreshing retreat during the hot summer months and a warm refuge during the winter. Divers floating along the gentle current routinely encounter large schools of largemouth bass, bluegill, bowfin, and freshwater turtles navigating the eelgrass beds. Visually, the contrast of the bright green riverbed against the deep blue water under the Florida sun creates an incredible backdrop. Experiencing a freshwater drift dive here feels like gliding through a giant, natural aquarium, where the sunlight filters through the surface to illuminate the limestone fissures below. The Rich History of Inland Diving in DunnellonCentral Florida has long been recognized as the cradle of freshwater scuba exploration. Decades ago, early pioneers of the sport recognized that the deep limestone vents, sinkholes, and spring runs offered an unparalleled training ground for subsurface exploration. Over the years, towns like Dunnellon and the surrounding Citrus County area grew into global destinations for certification and technical skill development. This region is famous for its unique geological formations, where ancient subterranean waterways break through the surface to create interconnected river systems. The long-standing history of aquatic sports in these spring runs has fostered a community dedicated to conservation and safe exploration practices, solidifying the area's reputation as a world-class training ground for divers of all levels. The Liquid Silence Dive Charters DifferenceLiquid Silence Dive Charters serves as your professional guide to these historic spring systems, bringing local knowledge and a high level of hospitality to every excursion. Our operation specializes in private, expert-led tours and comprehensive SDI scuba instruction designed around your specific schedule and comfort level.
